Hörmann garage door remote replacement: identify yours

Hörmann has changed its remote system more than once, and the generations don’t mix. The good news is that a photo of the back of the remote usually settles it.

Which Hörmann system do you have?

There are three generations you’re likely to come across:

  • 40 MHz is the oldest. These remotes usually have grey buttons, and they won’t work with anything newer.
  • 868 MHz remotes such as the HS4-868, HSM4-868 and HSE2-868 came next, and some of the same models were made in 433 MHz versions too. These use a fixed code.
  • BiSecur is the current system. It’s two-way, encrypted and rolling code. BiSecur remotes have BS in the model name, for example the HS5 BS or HSE4 BS.

The same Hörmann motor range, such as SupraMatic or ProMatic, has come with different radio systems over the years, so the motor name alone doesn’t tell us which remote you need. The label does.

If your door is a Garador, look for a Hörmann label too. Garador is part of the Hörmann group, and many Garador doors use Hörmann remotes.

No clear label? What to photograph

Any of these will usually tell us the generation:

  • The back of the remote. The model name and frequency are usually printed there, and BiSecur models include BS.
  • The buttons. Grey buttons usually mean an old 40 MHz remote.
  • The motor label on the unit on the ceiling.
  • The receiver, if there’s a separate box on the wall.
